AMR - THE SILENT PANDEMIC

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is emerging to be the most prioritised problem among hospitals as multiple use (which includes both misuse and overuse) of a particular antibiotic has resulted in genetic modifications in the pathogen resulting in ineffectiveness of the administered drug. 

Doctors are working towards an effective strategy against the growing resistance among organisms since  different infections are arising where only limited antimicrobials are only available to treat them. 

Antibiotic Resistance(AR) Threats Report released by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at 2019 provides a list including approximately 18 antibiotic resistant bacteria and fungi and its a report from 2019. As of 2023 it is expected that more than 30 - 35 PAN - resistant organisms are present.

Root cause behind AMR - "ONE SIZE FITS ALL" Concept. 

Some part of the world still believe that 'ONE SIZE FITS ALL'. But there is no such theory like that since no single anitibiotic can cure all disease. On analysing the root cause behind the evolution of resistant organisms, WHO identifies 5 major areas that leads to AR

• Misuse of the available antibiotic
• Overuse of the preferred antibiotic 
• Availability of Quality Antibiotic
• Quantity of antibiotic available
• Presence of fewer Antibiotic when compared to the infections

AMS programme and importance :

Antimicrobial stewardship programmes focus on improving the  efficient and correct use of antimicrobials. Hospital all over the world now recognises the AMR issue and develops strategies against it through these stewardship programmes.

To build a better world, there must be efficient medicine at right quality and quantity for all and thats what AMS programmes focuses on.
