"SCRUB TYPHUS" UP'S MYSTERIOUS FEVER

Mathura, in western Uttar Pradesh, has recently seen more than a dozen cases of scrub typhus. This mysterious illness was also observed in Sentinel Assam, where 29 cases of scrub typhus were discovered, promoting a COVID-19 dedicated hospital to close for 15 days. Scrub typhus, also known as bush typhus, is caused by the bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi, which is spread by larval mites, or infected chiggers. 

Scrub typhus has symptoms that are similar to vector-borne infections that develop within 10 days after being bitten. Fever, headache, body aches, muscle soreness, chills rashes, mental changes, and swollen lymph nodes are among the symptoms. Organ failure and bleeding can occur in patients with a severe form of the illness, which can be fatal if not recognized and treated promptly. 

Although there is no vaccine available for scrub typhus, the drug doxycycline is used to treat the infection. It is only for adults and is not intended for children. Antibiotics, on the other hand, can be useful for a speedy recovery if diagnosed on time. 

Following these steps as preventive measures is advised by experts: 

• Because there is no vaccine available, avoid contact with infected chiggers. Do not spray repellent on your skin or under your clothing. 

• Apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent. 

• Dress the child in clothing that covers his or her arms and legs. 

• Do not use insect repellent on a child's eyes, hands, or mouth, or on cuts or irritated skin.
