MALE INFERTILITY

Edited by, SNEHA MAVIS

According to the World Health Organisation, infertility occurs when the male or female reproductive system fails to produce a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. It has been discovered that 40% of infertility cases are linked to males, 40% to women, and 20% can be tied to both sexes. However, unlike women, who are acutely aware of their biological clocks, many males are still unaware of their own reproductive health.

Male infertility can be caused by a lack of sperm, defective sperm function, or sperm delivery obstructions. Male infertility may be caused by illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

The signs and symptoms include Sexual dysfunction, Pain in testicular area, lack of smell, recurrent respiratory illness, gynecomastia, reduced facial or body hair and decreased sperm count.

DIAGNOSIS:

The general physical exam, sperm analysis, scrotal ultrasound, hormone analysis and testicular biopsy are all performed for the diagnosis of male infertility.

LIFESTYLE PRACTICE TO MAINTAIN GOOD REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH:

Regularly visit doctor: The doctor can maintain track of your health and take steps to avoid problems in the future.

Stop smoking and limit alcohol: One of the most common cause of erectile dysfunction in men is smoking. Excessive alcohol use might also have a negative impact on fertility.

Practice good hygiene: Regular genital hygiene is important to avoid the accumulation of bacteria in genitals, which can lead to illnesses.

Lifestyle changes: Maintaining a suitable nutritious diet and engaging in appropriate physical activity will keep the reproductive system in good health. Exercise for at least 15-20 Minutes every day and try to avoid stress as much as possible.

Infection Prevention: In men, sexually transmitted diseases(STI) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoes can lead to infertility. This can be controlled by limiting the number of sexual partners, using protection during intercourse and getting frequent STI screenings.
